The MD-PHD Program at Yale University was established in 1969 and graduated its first students in 1973. The Program has had 309 graduates to date; 240 of these have completed their training.  For a comprehensive listing of our students, click here to view the Student directory 2017-18.

Of the graduates who received both the M.D. and Ph.D. Degrees, 41% are in clinical departments or clinical services, 11% are in basic science departments, 15% are in private practice, 6% are in industry or biotech, and 23% are still in residency or postdoctoral training. Of those who have completed training and are in academic positions, 15% are full Professors, 12% are Associate Professors, 17% are Assistant Professors and 18% are Chairs or Co-chairs. An indicator of success is the fact that 53% of those in full-time academic or research positions who have completed training have active research grant from the NIH or other government agencies. Our questionnaire also included a request for an update on the publications of past trainees.  During the period 1973 to the present, a total of ~8,000 papers have been published by 248 out of 261 total graduates whom we contacted.

Research Rotations

Students are expected to carry out two lab rotations in the summer of their first year that are designed to narrow down the choice of a thesis mentor and lab prior to embarking on the 6 month of clinical rotations. To help with this crucial choice of a mentor,students can meet with any of the MD-PhD faculty.  The Director and, Deputy Director, Dr. Fred Gorelick play a major role in finalizing this choice. Of course the more senior students are an excellent source of information!

Faculty Mentoring Program

We have established a faculty-mentoring program for our students, which is designed to:

  1. Establish relationships between students and MD-PhD mentors, starting with matriculation at Yale and maintained throughout the entire course of their studies
  2. Have these mentors provide unique resources and mentoring perspectives for dual-degree students that are not otherwise provided by the MD and PhD advisory programs
  3. Foster interclass relationships within a mentor's cohort of students that provides an additional level of peer-to-peer mentorship between dual-degree students
  4. Create a better support network for MD-PhD students that is not only helpful to students when they seek support, but also actively promotes their ongoing development as a physician scientist in every stage of their training

Wards Re-entry

A challenging time in an MD-PhD's timeline takes place a few months before defending their thesis when the specter of re-entry to the wards faces them. Dr. Tamar Taddei, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine/Digestive Disease, meets with each student thorough their time here and especially when reentry to the ward is imminent. She helps students assess their clinical preparedness arranges for warm ups as needed. She also helps students arrange for longitudinal clinical experiences during the PhD years including a new initiative where students are matched up on one with a clinical preceptor in an area that the student may consider for their long-term careers as physician-scientists. Career Planning

Drs. Taddei and Aronson arrange an annual set of career planning session in residency programs that students will usually think. This will include discussions of planning personal lives around careers as physician-scientists, research residencies suited for MD-PhD students, post residency fellowships and grants, and applying for an academic position.

Following graduation, the majority of our students carry out a research residency. In addition to tuition and health insurance coverage, MD/PhD students receive a stipend to supplement their living expenses. The NIH base level of stipend support for MD/PhD students is $23,844/yr for 2017-18. Once a student affiliates with a graduate program and begins research in the laboratory full time, the school administration and department supplement the stipend level to that of a graduate student, which is $35,150/yr for 2017-2018.

Health Services

All MSTP students are provided with comprehensive prepaid health care services and hospitalization through the Yale Health Plan (YHP), a health maintenance organization located at the University Health Services Center,  55 Lock St, New Haven, CT 06511,  telephone (203) 432-0246.

A supplemental benefit plan is available for purchase at a nominal charge to MSTP students. This plan provides protection against some types of medical expenses not covered by the YHP primary care services and the hospitalization plan, such as prescription drugs, routine vision care, durable medical equipment, podiatry services, dental services necessary due to traumatic accidental injury, organ transplants, and inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse services.

Students who carry their own coverage or are covered as dependents under parental plans must notify the MSTP office of this coverage and complete a YHP waiver form.
