Debt Management Opportunities & Resources

March 15, 2023

You said: You have concerns about the adequacy of debt management counseling.

We did: Our Financial Aid Office has organized workshops and one-on-one debt management sessions for students and also provides resources online. All first and fourth-year students with loans are required to have a one-on-one debt management session. Below is information about upcoming opportunities—and we welcome suggestions for how we can provide additional support!

Individual debt counseling sessions

Paul Garrard, a student loan consultant, has slots open in April for fourth-year students who have not yet had a one-on-one debt counseling session.

While individual debt counseling sessions are required for all first and fourth-year students with loans, starting in January 2023, we also made them available for any second, third, or fifth-year student who would find them helpful. Additionally, the YSM Office of Financial Aid is always available for questions and counseling (just call or email for an appointment!), and we plan to offer appointments with an external student loan consultant for second, third, or fifth-year students again in the months ahead.

John Caserta, a financial planner who presents across Yale, provided a Financial Literacy for Grads session on March 9. The recording is available here.

The AAMC led a more general money management session targeted towards graduates transitioning into residency on March 14. The recording is available here.
