Michael Karellas, MD, has joined the Yale team as assistant professor and regional director of Urology West.
Karellas is an expert in the lower Fairfield area, joining us from Stamford Hospital where he served as director of the urology division and medical director of the surgery department for more than six years. Prior to that, he led and practiced at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey and Rutgers Cancer Institute, and completed a 3-year fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
“I strongly believe in a learning culture that promotes creativity and collaboration,” says Karellas. “And I welcome new ideas and perspectives. I’m also committed to patient advocacy and quality improvement, which drive productivity.”
Karellas specializes in advanced robotic surgery and urologic oncology. He also performs general urology procedures, such as image-guided prostate biopsies. He has interests in programmatic development and medical education. While he will be practicing in Greenwich, he looks forward to collaborating with members across the department to facilitate patient access to research and clinical trials offered by Yale Urology.
Karellas is originally from the Midwest. Before medical school and a residency at the University of Kansas, he was a practicing pharmacist for several years. He became convinced of his specialty while on a urology rotation, during which time his uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He currently lives in New York with his wife and three children. He enjoys skiing, traveling, and cooking.
