PAD deserves attention for various reasons, including the fact that people who have the condition are more likely to experience a heart attack or stroke. Risk factors for PAD are wide-ranging. People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, or atherosclerosis are among those at increased risk for the condition. Current smoking is linked to a two- to three-fold increase in risk.
