March Web Editors’ Meeting Overview

March 12, 2013
by Justin Fansler

Thanks to everyone who braved the rain to attend our first monthly Web Editors’ Meeting of 2013. Below is an overview of the topics we discussed along with links to additional content:

Lab Websites

In an effort to give faculty the same access to professional websites and functionality as departments, the school is working to move all lab websites into the official YSM lab template in 2013. Our goal with this move is to leverage the school’s investment in web infrastructure to give labs a supported platform through which they can promote their work.

Over the next year, our office will be reaching out to faculty to transition their websites. Before starting work on each department, our team will reach out to the departmental website editor to coordinate schedules and communication efforts. If there are website improvements or additional templates faculty would like to see, please let us know! For more information, please visit the following:

New Tridion Training Process

Instead of hosting monthly two-hour long Tridion training sessions, we’ve created a series of short videos that cover the basics. New editors (or those who need a refresher) should first watch the videos, and then sign up for office hours during which time we can answer your specific questions. We are also happy to answer your questions via telephone (737-7932), email, or a screen share session. For more information, please visit the following:

Profile System Redesign

Dan Poincelot recently joined our team and has responsibility for the school’s profile system as well as our other custom applications. His first major project is a complete overhaul of the Profile System, redesigning it from the ground up. We’ll be adding lots of new functionality, like a publications import from PubMed, and creating significant interface improvements.

Over the next few months, we’ll reach out to profile system users to participate in focus groups – we want your input! In the meantime, if you’d like to put your feedback in writing, please email it to ysm.editor@yale.edu. We plan to launch the new profile system in late 2013. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Flyerboard

We’ve finally started programming the new Flyerboard! For those not familiar with this project, it’s a massive upgrade to the interactive touch screen that hangs in our office at 1 Church Street. The new version has a significantly improved design and displays more data from the systems that power YSM websites, including the calendar, profile system, news, etc.

Departments and organizations at the school can purchase screens to hang in their offices to display customized content. Screens cost approximately $2,500 and the department is responsible for the cost to hang the screen (along with Ethernet and power connections). Once installed, we’ll connect the screen to your customized Flyerboard website and users can begin interacting with your content via touch.

New Templates

Over the past few months, we’ve released a series of new templates and updates. Below are instructions for the templates discussed at our March meeting:
