A Drosophila model of a mitochondrially-based stress-signaling pathway

Pro-apoptotic signaling via the transcription factor E2F1 in mammalian neurons can be induced by mitochondrially derived oxidative stress in an AMPK dependent manner. We are extending these findings to drosophila in order to utilize the unique genetic screening techniques available in this organism to identify new activators and suppressors of this important, newly identified stress pathway.
