HIV, Aging and Critical Illness

Dr. Akgün's research has primarily focused on MICU admissions and outcomes in Veterans with particular focus on comparisons between HIV infected and uninfected patients in the current combination antiretroviral era. Using the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS; PI: Amy Justice), a multicenter observational cohort study, Dr. Akgün and her research team have used a novel HIV-specific scoring system, the VACS Risk Index (VACS Index), to predict hospitalizations and MICU admission for HIV infected patients.

Current investigations include using the VACS Index on MICU admission to predict mortality for HIV infected and uninfected patients as well as using the VACS Index to predict patient-centered outcomes such as health-related quality of life and frailty-related phenotype among MICU survivors. We are also examining drug trajectories over nursing shifts in critically ill patients.
