October 18, 2022

Demetrios Braddock, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology, and Ranjit Bindra, MD, PhD, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Therapeutic Radiology and Professor of Pathology, were honored with 2022 Yale Faculty Innovation Awards, which recognize the significant contributions of Yale faculty who develop new technologies and launch startups that address global challenges.

Dr. Braddock was honored for Petragen, a company that provides novel therapeutics for adults with periodontal disease, which impacts nearly half the adults in the U.S. aged 30 and older.

Dr. Bindra was honored for Alphina Therapeutics, a company whose aim is to leverage proprietary biomarkers and breakthrough insights for the development of oncology therapies targeting cancer metabolic pathways. Dr. Bindra also received a second Innovator Award with Seth Herzon, PhD, Milton Harris ’29 PhD Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutic Radiology, for Modifi Biosciences, a company that is developing therapeutics that uniquely target specific acquired cancer cell DNA mutations.

Drs. Braddock and Bindra were among 12 Yale faculty honored at an October 3 ceremony. The inaugural class of awardees represents some of the 60 new ventures launched at Yale in recent years. These startups have generated over $3.7 billion in venture capital investment – and contribute to a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship responsible for 1,600 patents over the past four decades. Among the issues these ventures address include climate change, improving human health and building the future of quantum computing.

“Each of our honorees illustrates how we can translate research into beneficial products, services, and social ventures. And together, they offer an exciting glimpse of the boundless promise our future holds,” Yale President Peter Salovey said.
