During the 2022 European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) held from May 4-6, Natalia Szejko, MD, PhD a postdoctoral fellow in the Falcone Lab was awarded the ESOC Young Research Investigator Award in Stroke for her submitted abstract, “Epigenetic Age and Ischemic Stroke: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study.”

A hybrid event based in Lyon, France, the ESOC is a summit of Europe’s leading stroke researchers and physicians. Participants have the unique opportunity to share and learn about the latest research and technological advancements in stroke care from their peers.

The Award recognizes early-career researchers whose research findings make significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms of stroke and improving patient outcomes. One of only five awardees, Dr. Szejko will receive this important distinction for leading a study that examines the role of epigenetic age in ischemic stroke. A biomarker of aging that is receiving increasing attention, epigenic age is calculated using a combination of epigenomic methylenation and clinical data and can provide information that is complementary to chronological age.

The other team members in this project are: Cameron Both, Cyprien Rivier, Julian Acosta, Kevin Sheth and Guido J. Falcone.
