August 21, 2020

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has named Daniel DiMaio, MD, PhD, a recipient of its Outstanding Investigator Award. DiMaio is Deputy Director of Yale Cancer Center, the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor of Genetics, and Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, and of Therapeutic Radiology. DiMaio will receive more than $7 million in cancer research funding over seven years from this award.

“I am very grateful for this award, which will support our efforts to advance understanding of the unique mechanisms that mediate infection by human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 5% of all human cancer,” said DiMaio. “This research is vital given the continued clinical challenges in the treatment and prevention of HPV-associated malignancies, and it will also provide new insight into basic cellular processes and perhaps lead to the development of new strategies to treat a variety of diseases.”

“Dr. DiMaio’s research provided vital insights and broadened our understanding in the field of HPV, as well as tumor virology and prevention and treatment of HPV-associated cancers,” said Charles S. Fuchs, MD, MPH, Director of YCC and Physician-in-Chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital. “This award recognizes his outstanding record of accomplishment and innovation and his leadership in the field and will enable him to extend his important work to make even greater contributions.”

The highly competitive NCI Outstanding Investigator Award supports investigators with outstanding records of productivity in cancer research by providing extended funding stability and encouraging investigators to continue or embark on projects of unusual potential in cancer research.
