Linda Coleman, JD, the Director of the Yale Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), which assists Yale University in meeting its ethical and regulatory obligations for the protection of human research participants, has accepted an appointment to the Board of Directors of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).

The AAHRPP is an international non-profit group that helps organizations worldwide strengthen their human research protection programs (HRPPs) using a voluntary, peer-driven, educational accreditation model to ensure that HRPPs meet rigorous standards for quality and protection. To earn accreditation, organizations must provide tangible evidence—through policies, procedures, and practices—of their commitment to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement. As a member of the AAHRPP Board of Directors, Coleman will join a group of leaders and experts to drive policy that will strengthen and promote the safety of human participants in research.

“This appointment is an affirmation of Linda’s unwavering dedication to the protection of research participants’ rights,” says Professor of Laboratory Medicine Brian Smith, MD, Deputy Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the Yale School of Medicine, and Co-director of the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation. “Her integrity and depth of knowledge of human research protection will be a valuable asset to the AAHRPP.”

In addition to leading Yale’s HRPP, Coleman is currently serving as a member of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), a group convened by the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary to provide expert advice and recommendations on issues pertaining to the protection of human subjects in research.

“As a member of the Board of Directors of the AAHRPP, Linda Coleman will be well-positioned to share her vast expertise in research management on a global level,” said Pamela Caudill, Senior Associate Provost for Research Administration, “and research organizations and participants everywhere will benefit.”

Before coming to Yale in 2016, Coleman worked at an organization that provides independent IRB review and consulting services and as an attorney, where her practice focused on health and employment law.
