2013 has been a year of great momentum at the School of Medicine. As 2014 approaches, we look forward to continued excellence and new advances in research, education, and patient care.

Dear faculty, students, staff, alumni, and friends,

Despite the challenges posed by a rapidly changing landscape for healthcare and biomedical research, 2013 has been another great year for Yale School of Medicine.

The quality of our science has never been higher. The already challenging research funding environment of the NIH, exacerbated this year by sequestration, has not deterred our scientists. Last week alone marked the awarding of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to our colleague Jim Rothman, as well as the presentation of the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences to Rick Lifton.

333 Cedar Street is a letter from Dean Robert J. Alpern, MD, Ensign Professor of Medicine, on topics of interest to the Yale School of Medicine community. Write to Dean Alpern at

While we continue to address the systemic changes underway in healthcare delivery, our clinical practice continues to grow, with volumes and revenues rising, thanks in part to the addition of many new faculty and to the leadership of Yale Medical Group’s CEO, Paul Taheri, who is transforming the practice.

Progress on the new curriculum continues apace. More than 200 faculty and students have been actively involved in creating models and recommendations for the components of this new curriculum, and we continue to be committed to a careful and thoughtful implementation process.

As we prepare to greet the year 2014, I want to thank each and every member of our community for their continuing commitment to excellence.

I wish you and your families a joyous holiday and all the best for a happy and healthy New Year.
