Immune Sensing of Allergens Promotes Avoidance Behavior
A new study published in Nature demonstrates how the immune system plays a role in the development of behaviors to avoid food allergens. Previous research has suggested that the immune system may be involved in behavioral modification beyond simply protecting the body from infectious diseases.

Dr. Chang Wins Artificial Kidney Prize Phase 2 at KidneyX Summit
William Chang, MD, PhD, is a recipient of Kidney Innovation Accelerator (KidneyX) Summit’s Artificial Kidney Prize Phase 2 for research on engineering bioartificial kidneys. He was one of eight recipients who will share a $9.2 million prize announced at the organization’s event in Washington, D.C. in June.

New Cell Therapy Program to Offer Advanced Cell-based Treatment for Patients With Severe Lupus
A new technology called chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has been successfully used to treat patients with cancer. Fotios Koumpouras, MD, Nathan Johnson, MD, PhD, and Marwin Groener, MD, are working to apply this novel branch of science to help patients with lupus.

Silvia Vilarinho, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases) and of pathology; was named the 2023 Leah Lowenstein Award recipient at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Commencement ceremony on Monday, May 22, 2023. Stephen Wang, MD, MPH, a PGY-3 resident in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Primary Care Residency Program was honored with the Betsy Winters House Staff Award, along with Justin Nguyen, MD, a chief resident in the Department of Urology.
