About Our Program
Cross-Program Information
For over two decades, Waterbury Hospital was the primary teaching site for the Yale Primary Care Residency Program, a Yale-sponsored internal medicine training program. In 2012, Yale-New Haven Hospital completed a merger with the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven creating two campuses less than a mile apart. As a result of this expansion, the Yale Primary Care Residency Program relocated its primary teaching site to the Hospital of Saint Raphael in 2014. Simultaneously, Waterbury Hospital became the primary site of a new Yale-sponsored internal medicine training program, Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program, joining the Department of Internal Medicine’s Yale Traditional, Yale Primary Care, and Yale Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Programs.
The residency curriculum, implemented by talented residents and faculty hailing from a diverse set of backgrounds, also includes the extensive resources and collegial environments of the Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. Residents can partake in rotations at Yale-New Haven Hospital’s York Street Campus, Yale-New Haven Hospital’s St. Raphael’s Campus, and The Connecticut Veterans Administration Healthcare Center in West Haven. As a Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital program, we offer our residents exceptional leadership, research, and global health opportunities. These experiences include participating in the Yale/Stanford Global Health Scholars Program, the Yale Resident Fellow Senate, the Yale Graduate Medical Education Committee, and Yale’s Young Physician Leadership Program, among many others. Many of our residents have been appointed to leadership positions as members of these programs since our program’s inception in 2014.
