Fellow Focus in Four introduces you to fellows from each section of the Department of Internal Medicine. This month's fellow is Matthew Lempel, MD, a clinical fellow in rheumatology.
Why did you choose medicine?
I grew up in a small town in southern New Jersey where my father was one of the local primary care doctors. While he spent a lot of time in the office, we frequently had people knocking on our door late into the evening and on weekends, so I had the privilege to witness the positive impact a physician can have on both individual patients and the community.
Why did you choose Yale Department of Internal medicine for your fellowship?
Several minutes into my interview day I was able to sense that the level of scholarship and expertise at Yale was unparalleled. Moreover, training at a top academic center that receives many referrals from across region ensures one is exposed to a sufficient volume and breadth of pathology during their formative training years.
What was your path to Yale?
Before fellowship, I attended New York Medical College and completed internal medicine training at the Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Program.
What's a fun fact about you?
After a few weeks in college chemistry, I began fermenting hard cider with some friends and was quite close to opening a distillery on the Jersey Shore instead of starting medical school. I do not regret my decision!
Perk of living in New Haven, Connecticut?
I moved to Connecticut from out of state with my wife and children four years ago and we have been very happy! Regardless of the time of year there always is something to do, whether outdoors or indoors.
What is your 5- year goal, 10-year goal, overall career?
After fellowship I hope to find myself in a clinical role that will also allow me an opportunity to teach. I am confident that the training experience at Yale will prepare me for whatever lies ahead!
