Research Summary

My research is focused on the impact of second-hand smoke in the biology of asthma and the role of microRNAs in asthma severity. Cigarette smoke is a strong environmental influence with a negative effect in lung function and asthma. MicroRNAs are important in the epigenetic regulation of biologic processes, we have identified a microRNA that is associated with airflow obstruction and we are working to understand its biologic function.

Extensive Research Description

Our current projects are focused on the characterization of the molecular response to SHS in airway macrophages of asthmatics and the characterization of microRNA profiles on the airway of individuals with asthma.

My laboratory is also interested in the integration of high-throughput data generated in our laboratory and publicly accessible datasets to understand the biology of airway diseases and the fundamental molecular processes present across pulmonary disease in general.

I'm a believer in interdisciplinary approaches to resolve important problems in medicine and I welcome internal and external collaborations that share this vision.
