Voices of DEI: Snigdha Jain, MD

July 06, 2022

Introducing Snigdha Jain, MD, of the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.

What does diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you personally?

Diversity, equity, and inclusion mean that voices from groups that have been marginalized are heard in every conversation and every decision.

Why do you value diversity?

I value diversity because I believe it is the only way forward. The only way to improve health and wellness for all of our community, not for a select few—as has long been the case.

Why should an academic setting be equal and inclusive?

Academic settings set the standards for institutions in the community. Besides, they are the nurturing ground for students and trainees. They are the professional equivalent of a home to a child. If they are not equal and inclusive, the consequences are borne by society for generations to come.

Why are you on the diversity committee?

I am on the diversity committee to represent the voice of women, and especially of those of color and in training. I draw from my experiences in my professional training thus far to advocate for changes at the institutional level that could make the road more even for current and future women in medicine.

What do you look forward to most with these efforts?

I look forward to change, concrete steps that improve upon systemic flaws that are obstructive to the growth of women and those in minority. On a day-to-day basis, I look forward to connecting with like-minded peers and leaders at Yale Department of Internal Medicine.

The Department of Internal Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine knows that diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical to our mission; that providing a safe, welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds results in beneficial diversity of thought; and believes that having a diverse team enhances our ability to provide excellent clinical care, research, and medical education.
