The Vascular Medicine Outcomes (VAMOS) Program at Yale, under the leadership of Kim G. Smolderen, PhD and Carlos Mena-Hurtado, MD, will present twelve abstracts at this year’s American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions in Chicago, IL from November 5–7. In addition, several VAMOS trainees will be recognized.
Jiun-Ruey Hu, MD, MPH, a VAMOS fellow who is studying long-term outcomes associated with guideline directed medical therapy (GDMT) after peripheral vascular intervention, has been named an early career travel awardee. Sponsored by the Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), Hu’s award honors prior impact in the field of peripheral vascular disease care, including his prior research on the metabolomics of peripheral artery disease. He has previously placed first nationally among fellows from across the country at the annual National Kidney Foundation Young Investigators’ Forum for his metabolomics research.
In addition, VAMOS resident Jonathan Hanna, MD, has been selected as a finalist for the AHA’s Jay D. Coffman Early Career Investigator Award. Hanna is the second VAMOS trainee that has emerged as a finalist for the Coffman Award. Mahesh Anantha, MD, a former VAMOS fellow, had previously been a Coffman Award finalist for his work on the burden of critical limb ischemia.
Dr. Mena and Dr. Smolderen inspire and support mentees. Their thoughtful and distinct style of mentorship both in the cath lab and the research lab is something I hope to replicate in my future career.

Hu is also the recipient of the 2022 Department of Internal Medicine’s Fellow of the Year Award and the 2021 Dr. Peggy Bia Award for excellent clinical teaching.
