Meet Lori Granfield, Post Award Research Manager (Cardiovascular Medicine)

March 20, 2023

What is your role at Yale School of Medicine (YSM)?

I am the post award research manager for the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine. In my role, I provide financial grant support to our section chief, as well as to other faculty within the section. Currently four post award research accountants, who are my direct reports, are responsible for the post award financials for the section. I am the go-to person for my staff when they have questions or concerns or need guidance with their portfolio management.

Have you been involved in any projects that you are particularly proud of?

When the university transitioned to Workday, I was part of a team of Workday grant “gurus” that provided business process support to others within the university through help clinics, email, and telephone.

Why did you decide to work at YSM?

When I originally came to Yale 40 years ago, I started at the School of Medicine. For a short period of time, I worked across town at the Social Science Library but decided to return to YSM because I missed the hustle and bustle on this side of campus.

How did you become interested in your line of work?

I started out at the university in an administrative role. Many years ago, one of my supervisors exposed me to the “financials,” and from there my interest grew. I went from typing grant submissions to helping the faculty prepare their budgets, submit their grant proposals, and manage their grants once received.

What is the most rewarding part of your work?

I would have to say my coworkers. Working together as a team and supporting each other is very rewarding.

Why do you love working at Yale?

Aside from location, benefits, job flexibility, and growth opportunities, the main reason I love working here at Yale is the relationships I have made through the years. I have coworkers that are now lifetime friends.

What is a fun fact about you?

When we were first sent home during COVID, I thought I was going to go crazy not leaving my house. So I started walking, and now walking is my obsession! I try to walk at least two miles a day, regardless of the weather. You can sometimes find me at the Clinton Crossing outlet close to my home, where I have mapped out a two-mile walk for days when it’s raining, snowing, or too dark to walk in my neighborhood!
