Laura Morrison, MD, FAAHPM, FACP, was re-elected to the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) Board of Directors for a second three-year term.

Morrison is an associate professor of medicine (geriatrics) at Yale School of Medicine and serves as the director of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Education and program director for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Yale.

“It is again a huge honor to be voted in to represent my national colleagues and our region for the AAHPM,” Morrison said. “The slate of candidates is competitive and always filled with very dedicated and uniquely qualified people.”

As AAHPM embarks on a new strategic planning process in 2023, board members will play a key part in further engaging membership, patients, trainees, and colleagues at a time when enthusiasm for the role of palliative care continues to grow nationally and internationally, according to Morrison. She hopes to contribute toward building the organization’s capacity for workforce and research infrastructure expansion, striving for health equity, and advocating for key structural changes to better serve patients with serious illness and their families within the U.S. health system.

For me, it’s an opportunity to again give something back in service to an organization that has given me so much in my professional path and be a representative voice for colleagues in the field.

Morrison first became involved with AAHPM as a palliative care and geriatrics fellow in 2004. That year, she co-presented an educational session with her mentor at the AAHPM/Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Annual Assembly.

“It was a very formative experience in terms of being welcomed and sponsored forward into this rewarding field,” she said. “AAHPM has been my professional home ever since.”

After having contributed, thrived, innovated, and led in many different roles for AAHPM for nearly two decades, Morrison looks forward to continuing her work on the board to further the Academy’s mission.

“For me, it’s an opportunity to again give something back in service to an organization that has given me so much in my professional path and be a representative voice for colleagues in the field,” she said.
