Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (9/13/22)

September 13, 2022
by Vandana Khungar and Aba Black

As the fall season quickly approaches, we are excited to share that the first student in the Visiting Students Scholarship Program arrives in New Haven on September 22. Joseph Oti-Nimoh is a medical student at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and will be here to participate in a four-week medical elective. Please give him a warm welcome if you cross paths.

Additional students will be on campus in October and November. If you know of a student who may be interested, they can learn more about the program on the Department’s diversity website.

The search for the Department of Internal Medicine’s Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is well underway. First round of interviews are still ongoing and selected applicants will be invited to campus for the next round of interviews.

In addition to adding a new vice chair of DEI over the next few months to the department and its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Medicine (ODEIM), we are proud to announce that Janet Henrich, MD, has joined ODEIM as assistant chair for Women and Gender Equity. We are excited to learn more about her work in the Women’s and Gender Health Education Program as we incorporate an increased focus on gender equity within the work of this office. On January 5, 2023, Janet has arranged a joint Yale School of Medicine and VA Connecticut Healthcare System Medical Grand Rounds on the overturning of Roe v. Wade and its implications. She has developed a core curriculum on women’s health that is delivered to our residents. We are in the process of assembling experts from each section to serve as writers and reviewers of the material relevant to their specialties. If you wish to nominate someone (self-nominations encouraged), please contact Janet, Vandana, and Cayetana via email.

As you plan your calendars for the remainder of September, mark it for this special event; the Section of General Internal Medicine will be hosting the Inaugural Inginia Genao Lecture in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on Thursday, September 22 at 12 p.m. The speaker for the inaugural lecture is Nancy Krieger, PhD, professor of Social Epidemiology and director of the Interdisciplinary Concentration on Women, Gender, and Health at Harvard School of Public Health. Please join us in person for this talk in Cohen Auditorium. Zoom is also available at this link and the session will be recorded.

As a reminder, if you haven’t completed the diversity, equity, and inclusion survey sent from Darin A. Latimore, MD, in July, please set aside the time to do so. Click here to read his July 25 email message and obtain the training link.

If there are questions about any Department of Medicine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, or an issue pertaining to DEI across the department for faculty, trainees, or staff, please contact Vandana. If you are a DEI vice chief and have a question or concern, please contact Aba. For GME-related DEI questions, please contact Steve Huot.

For this month’s “Voices of DEI,” we highlight Jane McDaniel. You can read this column on the website and via social media. If you wish to participate as a featured voice of DEI and we welcome all to do so, please complete the survey at this link.

L’Shana Tova to those celebrating Rosh Hashanah this month.

We are excited to partner with each of you on DEI initiatives.

Best wishes,
