Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (8/9/22)

August 09, 2022
by Vandana Khungar and Aba Black

The nationwide search for the Department of Internal Medicine’s Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) continues. We have interest from many qualified candidates. As the search progresses, candidates will be interviewed via Zoom, and as the field is narrowed, will be invited to campus to interview in person. If you know of someone who can elevate a strategic vision for expansion of DEI activities within the department, please encourage them to apply immediately at https://apply.interfolio.com/105407.

On July 25, 2022, Darin A. Latimore, MD, deputy dean of Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer for Yale School of Medicine, sent out an email regarding a new online training course through Kantola Training Solutions. Please set aside the time to complete this training. Thank you to Dr. Latimore for providing this valuable resource. Click here to read his July 25 email message and obtain the training link.

The Race, Bias, and Advocacy in Medicine (RBAM) Distinction Pathway recently completed its inaugural academic year and celebrated its first graduates. RBAM is open to residents across our three internal medicine programs and seeks to equip trainees with the tools needed to understand and combat racism and other forms of structural bias. We had a full year with topics including workplace microaggressions, incarceration health advocacy, DEI career development, and public health inequities. Along with Aba Black, MD, MHS, the faculty leaders are Isabel Bazan, MD; Shaili Gupta, MBBS; Stephen Holt, MD, MS, FACP; Sharon Ostfeld-Johns, MD; and Lisa Puglisi, MD. Thank you all to who have partnered with us to help develop future leaders in medicine. We look forward to rolling out new educational and mentorship initiatives over the next year.

If there are questions about any Department of Medicine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, or an issue pertaining to DEI across the department for faculty, trainees, or staff, please contact Vandana. If you are a DEI vice chief and have a question or concern, please contact Aba. For GME-related DEI questions, please contact Steve Huot.

For this month’s “Voices of DEI,” we highlight Michael Beasley, MD. You can read this column on the website and via social media. If you wish to participate as a featured voice of DEI and we welcome all to do so, please complete the survey at this link.

We are excited to partner with each of you on DEI initiatives.

Best wishes,
