Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (August 2021)

August 10, 2021
by Inginia Genao

Two year ago, planning began for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine (ODEIM), and I could not be happier with our progress.

I am proud to announce our newly nominated staff DEI representatives:

  • Carol Barfield
  • Rebecca Cardone
  • Elena Siuzdak

The Diversity Committee restructuring continues. Working groups are being created to support many facets of our work, such as innovation, recruitment, funding, etc. Johanna Elumn, MSW, PhD, BA, is leading the effort to meet with each working group to outline their key areas to explore, along with developing assessment tools (surveys, interview guides, etc.) to help guide their endeavors. Our next step is to create an advisory board, made up of 7-8 members from the community that will help to enhance our strategic vision.

Thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to broaden our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the department. But there is still a lot of work to do, and this work belongs to all of us!

For this month’s “Voices of DEI” we highlight Auguste Fortin VI, MD, MPH, MACP. You can read this column on the website and via social media. I hope you enjoy it! If you wish to participate, complete the survey at this link.

Please contact me with any questions regarding the department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Diversity Committee, and/or ODEIM. As always, thank you for all you do to make Yale a better place.

Sincerely,

Inginia Genao, MD, FACP

Associate Chair, Diversity & Inclusion
