Meet Yale Rheumatology, Allergy & Immunology’s First-year Fellows

A Texas native, Rex Huang, MD, (Rheumatology) graduated from Georgetown University and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 2017. He completed his residency at UT Rio Grande Valley before returning to the East Coast for his fellowship at Yale. Rex enjoys sharing meals with friends, reading, and playing music.

Jacob Meindertsma, MD, (Rheumatology) was born in Washington, D.C ., and raised in northern Virginia. He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and earned his MD from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2017. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia in 2020. Jacob enjoys woodworking, trivia games, and music.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in New Jersey, Trina Pal, MD, MPH, (Rheumatology) graduated from Lehigh University and obtained her MPH with a focus on global health at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2013. She earned her MD at St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2017. She completed her internal medicine residency at New York Medical College at St. Joseph’s Health in 2020 where she was a third-year chief resident. Trina enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and food.

John Kuster, MD, (Allergy & Immunology) grew up in New Hampshire. He earned a B.A. in psychology from McGill University, an M.A. in medical sciences from Boston University School of Medicine, and his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He enjoys music, having sung in two a cappella groups in college, and spending time with his wife and baby.

Shamsa Shafi, MD, (Allergy & Immunology) earned a B.S. in biology from Smith College, and her medical degree from UConn School of Medicine. She enjoys traveling, singing, and cooking, and spending time with her husband and two young children. (Photo not available.)
