Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (January 2021)

by Inginia Genao

Happy New Year!

As I shared in my December 2020 message, work to create the infrastructure for the department’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine (ODEIM) is underway.

The plan is for each section to have a vice chief for diversity, equity and inclusion that will engage with clinicians, researchers, educators, and staff and work on the goals and metrics laid out by the Barthwell Group.

Several of the sections are in the process of identifying the vice chief whose main responsibility would be:

  1. Reports to the Section Chief and the Department of Medicine DEI Vice-Chair.
  2. Works collaboratively with Section Chief, DEI Vice-Chair and other DEI leaders across the department to foster a culture of safety, inclusion, and belonging.
  3. Leads and participates in URiM recruitment efforts for training programs, faculty and staff.
  4. Manages efforts for ongoing DEI conversations.

If you are interested, please send an email to your section chief to self-nominate or nominate someone.

We will also hire a project manager to support this work. The job requisition will be posted in STARS by the end of the month.

Last month, I also sent a link to a five minute survey on diversity, equity and inclusion. If you haven’t answered it yet, would you complete it by the end of January. You can find the survey at this link. We will share the answers gathered throughout our communications so that our DEI views and efforts are well known in and outside of Yale.

Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you for all you do to make Yale a better place.

Sincerely,

Inginia Genao, MD, FACP

Associate Chair, Diversity & Inclusion
