Letter from Section Chief Steve Somlo, MD

Welcome to the first Yale Nephrology newsletter. I’m excited to share news with you about our section and its three core activities of patient care, research, and education. Just recently, we received news that Yale School of Medicine has been designated as a Center of Excellence in polycystic kidney disease (PKD) by the PKD Foundation for its patient-focused, comprehensive care.

Our successes stem from the dedication of our faculty, among them Ursula Brewster, MD, and Neera Dahl, MD, PhD, who have been promoted to professor of medicine. You can read more about Drs. Brewster and Dahl below.

Earlier this month, our faculty and physician-trainees shared their medical expertise and novel research findings at the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Week 2022. They also celebrated with Mark Perazella, MD, as he received the Robert G. Narins Award – the society’s highest education honor -- for his lifetime achievements in education. Congratulations Mark!

Lloyd Cantley, MD, gave the Robert Schrier Endowed Lectureship at the meeting describing the translational studies of human AKI performed in his lab in collaboration with Leyuan Xu, PhD, and Dennis Moledina, MD, PhD. Moledina gave two recorded pre-meeting talks, including “Biomarker for Acute Kidney Injury.” You can read about that study in this newsletter.

Madhav Menon, MBBS, MD, a physician-scientist who has contributed important findings to the field of human transplantation, also is profiled here, as is the Yale Summer Undergraduate Medical Research (SUMR) program directed by Shuta Ishibe, MD, that welcomes students from across the U.S. each year. Yale School of Medicine is one of eight institutions funded by the R25 NIH-NIDDK/KUH grant.

And finally, meet three physician-trainees who have recently joined our section: Dhara Dave, Nora Hernandez Garcilazo, and Crystal Jobson. We’re glad to welcome them to Yale Nephrology!

    Researchers Demonstrate XBP1 Reduces Severity of Polycystic Kidney Disease

    Most families with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) possess a genetic mutation in PKD1, that impacts the protein polycystin-1 (PC1). In a new article published online Friday, October 21, 2022, in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, a Yale team led by Stefan Somlo, MD and Sorin Fedeles, PhD, MBA demonstrated that the activation of the transcription factor XBP1 in vivo can improve the residual function of a mutant form of PC1, thereby decreasing the severity of ADPKD.
