by Sarah L. Spaulding

Fellow Focus in Four introduces you to fellows from each section of the Department of Internal Medicine. This month's fellow is Nora Hernandez, MD, a clinical/research fellow in Nephrology.

Why did you choose medicine?

I always enjoyed science, problem-solving, and listening to people’s stories. Medicine seemed like the profession that incorporated all those things into one.

Why did you choose Yale Department of Internal Medicine for your fellowship?

Yale truly felt like the place where I would get the best training. I knew the fellowship would mean exposure to a wide variety of patients and teaching by passionate faculty and leaders in their field.

What was your path to Yale?

I graduated from medicine school in my hometown of Tampico, Mexico and completed my residency in internal medicine at Michigan State University.

What's a fun fact about you?

I practiced competitive rhythmic gymnastics for eight years followed by track and field for six years.

Perks of living in New Haven?

New Haven is a beautiful place to live. It’s the perfect size, not too big or small, and you can find a little bit of everything: good food, entertainment, shops, and more.

What is your 5-year goal?

In five years I hope to have found a place to settle with my family, be practicing nephrology, and maintaining a good work-life balance.
