Geriatrics: Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center

Dr. Han's research career started with psychiatric epidemiology and clinical psychometry two decades ago, when he was a clinical psychiatrist and lecturer in a University teaching hospital in China. He published a serial reports on prevalence, population distributions and risk factors of neurotic disorders and won 2 WHO awards. In middle 1990s, he came to the US for postgraduate medical training in University of Washington as an ECFMG fellow. Subsequently he worked as a NIH visiting associate with NIMH and then as a research fellow in geriatricpsychiatry with McGill. His research interests then focused on epidemiology of depression and cognitive disorders. He published the first epidemiological survey on mood seasonality in Chinese population. In addition, he developed a clinician consensus-based anticholinergic rating scale to examine the effects of anticholinergic medications on delirium in older medical patients. After joining the Yale Program on Aging in early 200P, hi s research interests have expanded to longitudinal modeling of cognitive and functional decline and the methodologies to address selection and confounding bias in observational studies. With collaboration with POA and VA colleagues, he updated the clinician-rated anticholinergic score to assess the cumulative effect of anticholinergic drug exposure on cognitive and executive functions in community-dwelling older veterans. That study raised awareness of potential risk of multiple medication use or ¤polypharmacy in the elderly. His current areas of research interests include application of latent growth modeling technique to ¤phenotype cognitive and functional aging, and use of propensity score and quasi-experimental methods to address potential selection and indication bias in observational studies of drug effectiveness and harms.
