Training

Resident physicians in both Yale traditional internal medicine and primary care programs perform the screening health examinations in the adult refugee clinic. While this clinic experience is a required component of the ambulatory internal medicine program, many residents volunteer to provide this service. Residents take these patients on their primary care panel when possible.

All internal medicine residents have refugee patients on their outpatient panel at some point in their three years of training. Medical students in their fourth or fifth year of training also perform health examinations in the refugee clinic.

Internal medicine residents are integral to the operations of the adult refugee clinic. A few selected residents take on the responsibility of clinic coordination and transition of refugees to longitudinal primary care. There is also a chief coordinating resident.
