The Section of General Internal Medicine held a Women’s Health Update retreat in October. Faculty across the Department of Internal Medicine and the community spoke about various topics across women’s health to the 30 faculty in attendance.

“I think the value of these retreats includes an opportunity to take the time away from patient care to interact with our colleagues as well as learn about updates in care,” said Lori Bastian, MD, MPH, professor of internal medicine (general medicine) and one of the retreat organizers.

Discussions included updates on controversial and rapidly changing topics in women’s health, case-based learning utilizing breast and pelvic models and contraceptive options. Additionally, other presentations included updates on the management of sex and gender differences in chronic pain, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and experiences of transgender persons in the healthcare system.

“Thank you to Lori Bastian, MD, MPH; Sally Haskell, MD, MS; Jan Henrich, MD; Tracy Rabin, MD; Jacki Satchell, MD; Luz Vasquez, MD; and Laura Whitman, MD, for organizing and hosting our recent absolutely spectacular faculty retreat,” said Patrick O’Connor, MD, MPH, FACP, Dan Adams and Amanda Adams Professor of General Medicine; chief, general internal medicine. “This retreat offered a wonderful opportunity for our faculty to get state-of-the-art information on critical issues in women’s health from nationally-recognized experts from Yale while building camaraderie within Yale General Internal Medicine.”

The Yale Section of General Internal Medicine holds two faculty retreats per year –in the spring and fall. The focus of these retreats is on faculty development and career support and typically have a theme selected by the faculty. In addition to women’s health, topics such mentorship training, educational methods and office-based procedures have been among the themes of past retreats. The Spring 2019 General Internal Medicine retreat will be held on Friday, June 14. This retreat, led by Anna Reisman, MD, and Lisa Sanders, MD, FACP, will focus on op-ed writing. Planning is underway for the Fall 2019 retreat on diversity and inclusion in medicine and will be led by Inginia Genao, MD.
