Title: Studying Suicides after Prescription Opioids are Stopped: Let’s Move Beyond Statistics with the CSI:OPIOIDs Research Study

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the case for psychological autopsies as the right next step to understand and prevent suicides after prescription opioid reduction
2. Anticipate and describe the research challenges that uniquely affect study of suicides that take place in specific circumstances
3. Articulate the key methodological steps of public engagement, responding to patients with pain, adjudication and data collection
4. Describe how supportive scientists and clinicians can help

Dr. Kertesz is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an attending physician at the Birmingham, Alabama VA Health Care System. For over two decades he has offered primary care and addiction care to persons who experience homelessness and addiction, with a history of VA- and NIH-funded research on care for vulnerable populations. His research focuses on homeless, addiction, and suicide.

Addiction Medicine Rounds are CME accredited. Each session will be assigned 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
