O’Connor and Shulman Chosen As ACP Mastership Recipients

Patrick G. O’Connor, MD, MPH, MACP, Dan Adams and Amanda Adams Professor of General Medicine; and Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, MACP, MACE, George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Physiology; were named masters by the American College of Physicians (ACP).

O’Connor is a world-renowned general internist and expert in addiction medicine and serves as chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine. O’Connor has received many honors, the most recent being the Robert J. Glaser Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine in 2019, the 2017 John P. McGovern Award from the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research on Substance use and Addiction, and the 2016 American Board of Addiction Medicine’s President’s Award. In addition to his numerous roles at Yale, he currently serves as the chair of the National Board of the National Clinician Scholars Program.

Shulman is the co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center and a world-renowned expert in type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Shulman is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences and he has received many honors the most recent being the ACP’s Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes in 2020, the Banting Medal for Lifetime Scientific Achievement from the American Diabetes Association in 2018 and election to Mastership in the American College of Endocrinology (2015) and Fellowship in the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2018).

The first Mastership was established by the ACP 98 years ago in 1923. The organization’s bylaws indicate that Masters are selected based on integrity and positions of honor and “must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating impact in practice, leadership, or in medical research.” O’Connor and Shulman received the honor via a pre-recorded celebration in late April 2021.
