Daily Schedule

You will be accepted as part of the ward team during this clerkship, and are expected to participate actively in work rounds, attending rounds, and conferences regarding your patients. This rough schedule applies at rotations at YNHH. You will be given an orientation and schedule to follow.

Pre-Rounds

The student is expected to pre-round in the morning. Pre-rounding consists of checking vital signs, checking lab work, and doing a directed physical exam on the patients that you are following. Allow 15 minutes of pre-rounding time per patient. You are expected to “be the expert” on your own patients.

Work Rounds

Residents start the day at Yale with team rounds that begin at 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. on weekdays; check with your team for your weekend schedule. You will generally round on patients from 7:30 - 9:30 and then break from 9:30 - 10:30 while the residents go to report. If you are invited to resident report, remember this is a resident-directed teaching session and you should practice situational awareness.

After Rounds

Typically residents will leave the team at 9:30 to attend Resident Report and you and the intern will discuss the plan for your patients. You may have some individual teaching from your attending or an occasional student-specific case conference while your resident is at report.

Attending Rounds

Many teams will have attending rounds from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. but the frequency of this will vary by team and whether your team is post-call or not. Depending on your team you may have attending rounds anywhere from one to five times per week. Be prepared to take first five minutes of attending rounds to present focused literature review answer to patient-driven question that came up on morning work rounds the day prior to attending rounds. This should occur a minimum of once per week. Collect these small presentations as part of your Portfolio.

Remainder of Day

You will refer to your schedule for student-specific activities in the afternoon (see Didactic Activities below). We have tried to minimize taking you off of the floor but some of these activities are only learned during the medicine clerkship so are important to attend. The student’s day ends when all care for patients is complete and last scheduled conference is over.

Didactic Activities

This is your core curriculum. There are site-specific differences; refer to your site’s schedule. YNHH calendar available under “Monthly Conference Schedule” but is subject to change. We will try to update the web-calendar as soon as we learn of a change but in addition Kathy Bertier, clerkship coordinator, will email everyone to notify you of a change at the Yale site.
