New Haven, Conn. — Yale Cancer Center (YCC) received renewal as a Comprehensive Cancer Center from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The approval is for 5 years (2018-2023) and means YCC will continue as Connecticut’s only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Based on reviewers’ feedback that rated YCC as “Outstanding,” the renewal also provides YCC with a Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) of almost $23 million (a 74% increase compared to the previous funding period) to further enhance cancer care, education and research throughout the state, nationally and internationally.

“The Comprehensive Cancer Center renewal and support grant puts YCC among the elite cancer centers in the nation,” said Charles S. Fuchs, MD, MPH, Director of YCC and Physician-in-Chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital. “Few NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers can report such an extraordinary record of growth, impact, and accomplishment, and I am proud to be part of this great community.”

The renewal was based on a thorough assessment by a team of site visit reviewers. Leading scientists evaluated YCC on dozens of components of the Cancer Center, including the impact of its research, the number of patients taking part in clinical trials and how much cancer-related external funding is secured. It was noted in the report, ‘YCC discoveries have been paradigm-shifting and practice changing and there is every confidence that YCC will continue on a positive trajectory.’

“I look forward to working together with the NCI over the next five years of our CCSG to continue to reach our goals for our cancer center,” added Fuchs.
