Dorothy Baker, PhD, earned renewed funding for CT Collaboration for Fall Prevention through CT State Department of Rehabilitation Service/State Unit on Aging to continue statewide efforts to move fall prevention evidence into practice across Conn.

Teretha (Tee) Brooks was one of the 2019 honorees at the Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP’s 102nd Annual Freedom Fund Dinner on May 16. Brooks is an assistant administrator III in Internal Medicine, covering the Sections of Cardiovascular Medicine and Rheumatology, Allergy & Immunology.

Roy S. Herbst, MD, PhD, was named to the Board of Directors for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). He will assume his four-year term at the upcoming IASLC 2019 World Conference on Lung Cancer in Barcelona in September.

Jason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, was awarded the Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Inquiry Award from the American Physical Therapy Association for his manuscript published in Physical Therapy Journal entitled, “Impaired Physical Performance Predicts Hospitalization Risk for Participants in the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly.”

Anne Eichmann, PhD, was recently awarded funding by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant) to identify key regulators in endothelial barrier function: these will all create potential therapeutic targets to treat different diseases.

Annually, the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center at Yale School of Medicine solicits applications for pilot and career development awards to support aging research and training.

  • The recipients of the 2019 awards are: Pilot Study awardees: John Hwa, MD, PhD, Section of Cardiovascular Medicine: Platelets, Oxidative Stress and Aging; and Insoo Kang, MD, Section of Infectious Diseases: Studying the Role of NLRX1 in T cell Senescence and Its Interface with Lung Aging.
  • Pepper Scholar awardees are: Brienne Miner, MD, Section of Geriatrics: Insomnia Symptoms as a Multifactorial Geriatric Health Condition; and Maor Sauler, MD, Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine: Assessing Multiple Pathways of DNA Damage Responses in Normal Lung Aging and in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

In addition, Miner received the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Physician Scientist Training Award.

Kenneth Morford, MD, presented "Benzodiazepine use does not decrease treatment retention in a low-threshold methadone program," at the College on Problems of Drug Dependence in June.

At the Medical Oncology and Hematology Fellows' graduation, the David Fischer Teaching Awards were presented to Sarah Mougalian, MD, for medical oncology and to Alfred Lee, MD, PhD, for hematology.

Rachel Perry, PhD, recently presented "Leptin's Hunger-Suppressing Effects are Mediated by the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical Axis," and "Leptin Mediates Postprandial Thermogenesis through a Hypothalamic-Adrenomedullary-Adipose Tissue Axis," at the American Diabetes Association's 79th Scientific Sessions in June.

Gerald Shulman, MD, PhD, FACP, MACE, received the Arthur Riggs Award from the Rachmiel Levine Arthur Riggs Diabetes Research Symposium for 2019. He also received the Stanley Mirsky Award from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, N.Y.
