Medical Image Analysis, co-founded in 1996 by James Duncan, PhD, the Ebenezer K. Hunt Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology & Biomedical Imaging, is the second-ranked journal in radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging, with an Impact Factor of 8.8, according to the Journal Citation Report.
Duncan founded the journal and remains the co-editor-in-chief with Prof. Nicholas Ayache from INRIA (French National Research Institute) in Nice. Duncan and Ayache originally started the journal with Oxford University Press and switched about five years later to Elsevier, which continues to publish the journal today.
As editors-in-chief, Duncan and Ayache look over all the papers submitted to the journal, making reviewer and editorial board review assignments. Lawrence Staib, PhD, professor of radiology & biomedical imaging, is a regular member of the editorial board. Staib advises Duncan and Ayache and reviews key paper submissions.
Medical Image Analysis is one of the flagship journals of the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) Society, whose yearly conference is one of the primary venues for presenting current work related to advanced scientific and technical efforts in medical image analysis, machine/deep learning and image-guided intervention.
