Electives

Elective experiences allow fellows to deepen expertise in areas aligned with their clinical, academic, and career goals. Designed to complement the core clinical curriculum, electives provide opportunities to develop advanced procedural skills, explore subspecialty interests, pursue scholarly work, or engage in focused self-directed learning. Elective experiences are individualized in collaboration with fellowship leadership and faculty mentors while maintaining a strong foundation in comprehensive critical care medicine.

Fellows spend one month on the Interventional Pulmonary service, where they develop foundational bronchoscopy skills and gain experience in chest tube management, pleural procedures, and percutaneous tracheostomy. Fellows are also exposed to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures performed by our nationally recognized interventional pulmonologists.

Fellows interested in expanding their bedside imaging skills may pursue elective training in critical care echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasound. Experiences can be tailored to individual learning goals and may include advanced transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), hemodynamic assessment, and procedural ultrasound.

An elective with the Department of Anesthesiology provides additional experience in airway assessment and management, with particular emphasis on endotracheal intubation. Working alongside expert anesthesiologists, fellows refine airway techniques, gain experience with advanced airway equipment, and build procedural confidence across a wide variety of clinical scenarios.

The Tele-ICU elective introduces fellows to the growing field of remote critical care delivery. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary virtual ICU care while gaining experience with telemedicine technologies, continuous patient monitoring, and systems-based approaches to supporting critically ill patients across multiple hospitals.

Fellows may participate in Yale's Medical Toxicology educational program to strengthen their understanding of poisoning, drug overdose, environmental exposures, and other toxicologic emergencies. This experience complements the management of critically ill patients with complex toxicologic illnesses encountered in the ICU.

Dedicated research electives provide protected time to advance scholarly projects, analyze data, prepare manuscripts, and develop research skills under the mentorship of Yale faculty. Elective time may also be used to pursue clinical investigation, quality improvement, or medical education scholarship.

The Guided Reading elective provides a structured, individualized curriculum for fellows seeking in-depth study of a focused area of critical care medicine. Working one-on-one with faculty mentors, fellows establish personalized learning objectives, review foundational and contemporary literature, and participate in regular discussions that emphasize critical appraisal and clinical application.

Additional elective experiences can be developed in collaboration with other Yale clinical programs to support individual career goals. Examples include advanced liver disease and transplant hepatology, immunocompromised infectious diseases, and other specialty experiences that enhance expertise in the care of complex critically ill patients.

Beyond these established electives, fellows may develop individualized educational experiences in collaboration with faculty mentors. Opportunities are designed on a case-by-case basis and may include quality improvement and patient safety, healthcare administration, leadership, clinical operations, medical education, simulation, radiology, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), research methodology, or other focused areas of interest. Each elective is developed with clear educational objectives and faculty mentorship to ensure a meaningful learning experience.
