Overview

Christopher El Mouhayyar, MD, is a nephrologist who specializes in managing kidney-related conditions, including chronic kidney disease and dialysis care. He focuses on emphasizing effective fluid management and addressing heart-related complications that can arise from kidney disease.

“I want my patients to know that I see them as a whole, not just a set of lab values or a diagnosis,” he says. “Managing advanced kidney disease and dialysis can be incredibly overwhelming for patients and their families. I view my role as an advocate and a guide. I strongly believe in incorporating principles of supportive care into my practice, which means I will always prioritize open, honest communication. My ultimate priority is to ensure that the medical treatments we choose directly align with what matters most to my patients, their overall cardiovascular and kidney protection as well as their overall quality of life.”

As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. El Mouhayyar’s research is dedicated to advancing treatment methods related to kidney health and cardiovascular interactions.

“My overarching goal is to bridge the gap between rigorous data science and individualized, bedside patient care,” said Dr. El Mouhayyar, who was drawn to nephrology because it sits at the intersection of physiology and patient care. “On the research side, I am focused on using health data and clinical trials to improve highly practical outcomes for dialysis patients. In education, I am deeply passionate about equipping the next generation of nephrology fellows with modern, hands-on diagnostic tools.” Dr. El Mouhayyar received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, in Lebanon, completed his residency in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boston, and pursued a fellowship in nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
