On May 7, 2024, students and faculty mentors were celebrated at Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Student Research Day, an annual tradition at YSM since 1988.
Peter Aronson, MD, C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) and professor of cellular and molecular physiology gave the Lee E. Farr MD Endowed Lectureship at Yale School of Medicine’s annual Student Research Day on May 7. Using his own experiences as examples in his lecture titled From Sugar to Salt to Stones: Serendipitous Journey as Mentee and Mentor, Aronson noted the importance of chance events and serendipitous research findings in determining the course of his academic development and research career.
Lisa Korn, MD, PhD, instructor of medicine (rheumatology, allergy and immunology) has been selected to receive the 2024 Iva Dostanic, MD, PhD, Physician-Scientist Trainee Award.

There is not one set path to becoming a physician-scientist. Some physician-scientists attend medical school and obtain their PhD as part of an MD-PhD program. Some obtain their PhD prior to medical school or later during clinical fellowship. Others go to medical school, while simultaneously conducting research outside of a formal program. But there is one common thread—the love for both clinical care and scientific research.
