Dear Colleagues,
Although it just ended a few days ago, summer, with images of times with family and friends during July and August on the beach, hiking, and travelling locally and globally - seems like it was in the distant past. Fortunately summer-like weather has persisted although the leaves have definitely started to turn.
This virtual time warp is likely the result of the rapid pace of our academic lives that re-emerged after Labor Day. Our new residents and fellows have settled in and their clinical and research activities have ramped up. Our faculty meetings and conferences have reemerged on our calendars. Our GIM grand rounds covers core topics in GIM clinical practice such as tick-borne disease, cancer genetic testing, systemic therapy for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and the management of systemic sclerosis. Thanks to Lisa Puglisi and Matthew Ellman for organizing a great series! Our Thursday noon RIP and Educational Strategies & Faculty Development series included, among other things, a presentation by David Rosenthal about his upcoming film on the state of primary care. Thank you to Jeanette Tetrault and Cary Gross for organizing our Thursday noon sessions.
The fall is also the traditional time of our annual Inginia Genao Lectureship where we celebrate her time with us by having a visiting lecturer join us for a day, meet with trainees and faculty, and present the lecture during our noon conference. This year, the fourth speaker, Dr. Susana Morales, gave a wonderful presentation entitled, “Towards Health Equity.” A great discussion followed that included many of our faculty and our new Chair, Wolfram Goessling. Dr. Morales left us energized to vigorously pursue our important work in this critical area. Of course, it was great to see Inginia and her family and we look forward to continuing this annual fall tradition!
The new academic year also is a wonderful opportunity to welcome newly appointed faculty to Yale GIM. Each of these individuals, some of whom have been at Yale in other positions (e.g.: fellows, instructors), before joining the full-time and ladder track faculty, represent the best of our profession and are already making wonderful contributions to our core missions of patient care, education, research, and community wellbeing. Please see "welcome new faculty & staff" for a complete list. Welcome aboard!
As always, this month’s edition of Yale GIM News is teeming with exciting news of the many accomplishments of our faculty. Read on!
Another fall tradition of Yale GIM is our annual “GIM Day at the Yale Bowl” – this year featured the Bulldog’s Ivy League opener vs. Cornell’s “Big Red Bears!” We had 100+ staff, faculty, trainees and their families for what turned out to be a beautiful summer-like day and a tremendous 41-24 Yale victory! It was great seeing everyone there and meeting everyone’s families and friends.
As September turns to October, we will no doubt see the end of this beautiful warm (too warm, I’d say) weather and a return to autumn in New England. Enjoy it, because the snow is only a couple of months away!
