Yale Adult Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program

The Yale Adult Hospital Medicine Fellowship provides training in adult hospital medicine to graduates of ACGME-accredited internal medicine and medicine-pediatrics residency programs.

In addition, program fellows will have opportunities for certification and skill-building in medical education, quality/safety, leadership, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and procedures.

What training will I receive as part of the Yale Adult Hospital Medicine Fellowship?

Elements of the program include:

  • Core and elective curricular content in:
    • Quality improvement/patient safety
    • Healthcare systems
    • Clinical care/procedures/POCUS
    • Medical education
    • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Multi-layered mentorship, coaching, and support for scholarship and career development
  • Capstone research project
    • As a program fellow, you will choose a scholarly project in an area of interest including, but not limited to, medical education, quality improvement, patient safety, medical informatics, or healthcare administration
    • You will receive specific mentorship in project design, execution, analysis, and presentation/submission
    • Upon project completion, you will have multiple available venues for presentation of the finished product(s) within and outside Yale
  • Independent learning plans (ILPs)
    • You will self-assess your skills and identify areas of improvement
    • The ILPs are co-created and tracked together with the program director and mentor(s).

As a fellow, your clinical duties will include:

  • 20 weeks attending on inpatient services per year.
  • Broad array of available services which includes: “traditional” general medical ward team (resident, intern, sub-intern/clerkship student), “apprenticeship” hospital medicine ward team (resident only), intermediate care unit (resident only), “admitting” hospital medicine Emergency Department team (intern only), and APP hospital medicine ward services.
  • Elective opportunities on Palliative Care and Addiction Medicine consult services.

How long is a hospital medicine fellowship?

The Yale Adult Hospital Medicine Fellowship is a two-year training program.

This program is not accredited by the ACGME, consistent with all adult hospital medicine programs in the United States. Funding is provided by Yale School of Medicine, Yale’s Department of Internal Medicine, and its Section of General Internal Medicine.
