Social Media and Youth Mental Health: Does More Use Always Mean More Harm?

Through four pilot studies funded by Yale Child Study Center, several researchers are working to find out how social media affects the mental health of young people, and whether more use always means more harm. The projects are generating early findings that challenge oversimplified narratives about teen screen time. They point toward more nuanced, targeted approaches to understanding social media's harms and benefits.

March 11, 2025, marks five years since the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. We asked Yale School of Public Health faculty, staff, students, and alumni to reflect on the lessons they have learned since March 11, 2020, and how to apply those lessons if we are confronted with another health crisis. Their responses highlight the importance of community, collaboration, communication, and innovation.

The annual meeting of the Yale Child Study Center Associates was held in person on November 7, 2024, with a focus on the impact of the digital world—including social media—on children’s health and wellbeing. The meeting brought nearly 100 people together for an afternoon of talks by experts in the field. Fourteen faculty members provided brief, TED-talk style talks around the meeting’s theme, with a balance of related concerns and opportunities. Keynote speaker Andrew Solomon, PhD, wrapped up the afternoon sessions.

Penicillin Allergies Among Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants

Approximately 90,000 people receive hematopoietic stem cell transplants worldwide annually. These patients are immunocompromised and highly vulnerable to infections, including with multidrug-resistant organisms. Because penicillin and related beta-lactam antibiotics are used as the preferred therapy for many infections, patients who are labeled as having a penicillin allergy are at risk for inferior treatment and related clinical consequences.

Amid Opioid Overdose Crisis, Yale Program in Addiction Medicine Advises State on Drug Company Settlement Spending

The majority of the estimated $206 billion resulting from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement have not gone to address smoking or public health. Following a similar settlement of a multi-state litigation, the state of Connecticut is expecting around $600 million to address the state’s opioid overdose crisis, which resulted in 1,340 overdose deaths in 2023 alone. To avoid the experience of the Tobacco funds, Yale faculty are proactively providing recommendations on how to spend these funds.

Educational Videogame Intervention Encourages Teens to Get Tested for HIV

Teenagers made up an estimated 20 percent of new cases of HIV infection in the United States in 2020. The actual percentage, however, is likely to be higher because it is known that adolescents are the least likely of any age group to be aware of their HIV status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others. Only 9 percent of high school students in the United States report ever being tested for HIV.
