Message from Chief Loren Laine, MD

August 2024

Dear Colleagues,

As we enter the heart of the summer, we see a marked reduction in meetings and scheduled activities as people take time away to enjoy the warm weather. (Even after more than ten years in Connecticut, I'm always struck by the difference from my native Southern California, where the weather is more constant and there isn’t the same exodus in July and August.)

I encourage all of you to use this (relatively) quiet time to refresh your profiles in Beatrix. These profiles are an important way for our potential students, fellows, research partners, patients, and others to learn about each of us and our work. In particular, I'd encourage you to update or add research interests, which will allow our stakeholders to find you on our updated research web pages. Instructions for updating your profile are available on MyYSM.

The summer is also a time of new beginnings for the section as our new fellows start their journey in gastroenterology and hepatology. This is an enjoyable and exciting time for our faculty and returning fellows as they get to know the new fellows and introduce them to all aspects of digestive diseases. Please join me in welcoming our new fellows in gastroenterology/hepatology as well as our advanced fellows in endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease.

I hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer and are excited to embark on another great academic year.

Sincerely,

Loren Laine, MD
Professor of Medicine (Digestive Diseases)
Section Chief, Digestive Diseases, Yale School of Medicine
Medical Chief, Digestive Health, Yale New Haven Health

  • Finding the Right IBD Therapy for Patients: A Q&A with Jill Gaidos, MD

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, is an umbrella term for conditions that cause chronic inflammation in the digestive system, leading to abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Patients with IBD will receive a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, where inflammation damages the rectum and inner lining of the colon, or Crohn’s disease, which may cause inflammation in any part of the digestive tract. Together, these conditions affect about 1.5 million in the United States. Jill Gaidos, MD, associate professor of medicine (digestive diseases), medical director of the Yale Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program, and vice chief of clinical research (digestive diseases), shares more about the disease, new treatment options for patients, and other considerations for caring for patients with IBD.

  • Renalase May Predict Post-ERCP Pancreatitis

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure physicians use to examine the pancreatic or bile ducts utilizing a combination of endoscopy and fluoroscopy to capture X-ray images of the ducts. Unfortunately, this procedure is not without risks. After undergoing ERCP, patients are typically observed for one hour before discharge. Post-ERCP pancreatitis, the most common adverse complication, can occur after discharge. A newly published Yale-led study, “Clinical Predictive Value of Renalase in Post-ERCP Pancreatitis,” aims to assess whether a patient's renalase level influences the development of pancreatitis following an ERCP procedure.
