Kevan Herold, MD, professor of immunobiology and of internal medicine (endocrinology) won the Donald F. Steiner Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research. As part of the award, Herold presented a lecture entitled, “Can Type 1 diabetes be prevented or cured?” at the University of Chicago on May 4, 2019.
Herold’s research focus is in the field of autoimmune Type 1 diabetes. His lab is identifying the immune cells responsible for attacking the pancreatic islets, as well as studying how beta cells respond to these attacks. He has led clinical trials to stop the progression of Type 1 diabetes or prevent it from occurring in individuals who are at risk for the disease. Herold joined the faculty at Yale School of Medicine in 2006 and holds a joint appointment in immunobiology and internal medicine.
Established in 2006, the Donald F. Steiner Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research honors an investigator carrying out research in the field of diabetes.
