Scholarly Concentrations and Certificates

Yale School of Medicine (YSM) MD and MD-PhD students have several options to further develop their skills as scholars, researchers, and educators through scholarly concentrations in biomedical ethics, medical education, and medical humanities, and a certificate program in global medicine.

Biomedical Ethics Concentration

The Biomedical Ethics Concentration provides a substantial overview of the crucial and fascinating field of bioethics over the course of a student’s time at Yale. It is of particular value to those considering a focus on bioethics in their future work, whether in education, clinical practice, government, or advocacy.

Medical Humanities Concentration

The Medical Humanities Concentration has two tracks: Writing for the Public and Critical Health Humanities.

In Writing for the Public, students fine-tune their skills as budding medical authors and journalists by critiquing published works, workshopping pieces, and learning the nuts-and-bolts of storytelling.

In Critical Health Humanities/Museum Education, students develop programming using the visual arts to promote critical dialogue and self-reflection related to the health care system and the role of the health professional within it.

Medical Education Concentration

The longitudinal Medical Education Concentration helps students gain the skills and experience to be more effective educators and scholars. The coursework features interactive workshops to develop skills, teaching experiences with observation and feedback, mentorship, and a scholarly project.

Certificate in Global Medicine

The Certificate in Global Medicine organizes coursework and international experiences into a flexible, longitudinal curriculum that a student can complete over four (or five) years of medical school, while maintaining flexibility in terms of both the timing and content of these opportunities. The program provides students with a strong foundation in the principles of global health research and clinical practice and positions students competitively for residency programs and careers with a focus on global health. Since 2013, 38 students have been awarded the Certificate in Global Medicine.
