Rochelle D. Smith, MS, is the inaugural associate dean of diversity and inclusion and associate chief diversity officer at Yale School of Medicine. She came to Yale from Washington University in St. Louis, where she had been assistant provost for diversity initiatives. Among other achievements, Smith founded the Washington University Diversity Pipeline Consortium for STEM, and her experience also included co-designing two faculty-of-color retention programs at Washington University that resulted in a record number of these faculty receiving tenure. In addition, she led the MD/PhD diversity effort and founded three student affinity groups at the university.

As part of Smith’s portfolio at Yale School of Medicine, she co-administers the Yale Biological and Biomedical Science Diversity and Inclusion Collective (YBDIC), a student driven program committed to fostering the intellectual and personal growth of underrepresented minority (URM) students in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS). Smith serves as one of four Discrimination and Harassment Coordinators on the Dean’s behalf to receive concerns and offer advice and guidance related to diversity and inclusion, discrimination and harassment, retaliation, and equal opportunity. She is the co-chair of the highly successful Intersections Science Fellows Symposium, a pathway initiative designed to showcase the outstanding research contributions of postdocs from historically underrepresented backgrounds in the sciences and assist them in securing faculty positions. Smith assists Deputy Dean and Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Darin Latimore, with his varied portfolio.
