Advanced film screening for 'Picture a Scientist'

To view the film, please register

The Department of Genetics and in partnership with SWIM, WISAY, The Office for Women in Medicine and the Women Faculty Forum, is delighted to host a virtual screening of the critically acclaimed film “Picture a Scientist” from September 9 - 16. To view the film, please register.

About the film

This film tracks the journeys of three women – biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring – as they recount their own battles with gender inequity in academic science. It was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival: The Boston Globe calls it “quietly devastating” while Science refers to it as “sweeping in scope yet intimately compelling”.

The film will be available to watch from September 9 - 16 and registration is essential. Log in credentials will be sent to registered participants on September 9, and the film will be available for viewing until September 16.

Film Reception with Nancy Hopkins

Those who register will also be invited to attend a special post-screening virtual reception for the film with guest of honor Nancy Hopkins, Amgen Inc Professor of Biology emerita at MIT and one of the three women featured in the film. The reception will be an opportunity to come together to share reflections and reactions to the film with our colleagues in the Department and across the School of Medicine more broadly.

To RSVP to the reception, please register.
