Biography

Dr. Hwang attended the University of California, San Diego as an undergraduate, majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. She received an MS degree in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University and her MD from the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Yale University and a fellowship in Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California. Since completing her training, Dr. Hwang returned to Connecticut where she has built a busy clinical practice in Waterford. She has also been active teaching ophthalmology residents at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven.

Dr. Hwang will join our cornea service as an Assistant Professor and continue to hold medical staff appointments at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. She will continue her clinical practice in a broad range of eye diseases including corneal diseases, premium intraocular lenses, phakic IOLs as well as developing new corneal service initiatives in collagen cross linking for complex patients with keratoconus and other disorders. Her addition will allow the Department of Ophthalmology to continue its regional growth, with offices that will now span from Norwalk to the Rhode Island border along the shoreline. She will also continue her important role in residency education and teaching as an Attending Physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
