Biography

Dr. Liu joined Yale Eye Center as Assistant Professor in July 2013. After graduating from medical school magna cum laude, he served as Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Associate at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. There Dr. Liu was grant-funded and won the 2004 Annual Research Award. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at George Washington University, where he was appointed for a term as Chief Resident and received an Interdisciplinary Research Fund award. Following a distinguished year as Clinical Glaucoma Fellow at Yale Eye Center, Dr. Liu joined Yale University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science as a full-time faculty.

Dr. Liu is dedicated to patient care, medical education, and research. He routinely performs complex lens, iris, and glaucoma surgeries. Along with his colleagues, Dr. Liu has introduced multiple novel glaucoma surgeries, including I-stent, I-track, and Xen Gel Stent, to the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Because of his excellent care, Dr. Liu has helped numerous patients restore their vision or stop their glaucoma from progressing. In 2022, Dr. Liu was recognized as Connecticut Magazine's Top Doctor by his peers.

Dr. Liu works closely with medical students, residents, and fellows. He is passionate about medical education. His dedication to resident education was recognized by receiving the prestigious Bruce Shields Award for Excellence in Teaching twice since he joined Yale.

Dr. Liu's research interests include medical and surgical management of glaucoma, ophthalmic laser, cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implant, complex anterior segment surgeries, and medical education. His bibliography includes over fifty scientific publications including papers and book chapters, as well as many years of invited presentations at regional, national and international professional conferences.
