Yale Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds: Professor Lawrence S. Cohen Honorary Lecturer

Giants of Yale Cardiovascular Medicine

James de Lemos, MD, Professor of Cardiology and Sweetheart Ball-Kern Wildenthal, MD, PhD Distinguished Chair in Cardiology at UT Southwestern, will deliver the inaugural Professor Lawrence Cohen Honorary Lecturer in the Fitkin Amphitheater, with a zoom option available.

Dr. de Lemos is the Cardiology Service Chief at Parkland Memorial Hospital where he also serves as CCU Director. He was the director of the Cardiology Fellowship at UT Southwestern from 2005-2011. He is an active investigator in the Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Research Center at UT Southwestern, and the Medical Director of the Dallas Heart Study.

He has chaired or co-chaired several research planning committees at UT Southwestern. His primary research interests are in early detection, risk assessment and management of cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on the role of cardiovascular biomarkers. His research has evaluated existing biomarkers such as B-type natriuretic peptide, C-reactive protein and cardiac troponins as well as novel biomarkers reflecting biological pathways of disease. He was the lead author of the Z phase of the A to Z trial, an international trial investigating different cholesterol lowering strategies in patients with acute coronary syndromes. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed an Internal Medicine Residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. He completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine and served on the faculty at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital before returning to UT Southwestern Medical School.

Lawrence S. Cohen, MD

As the former section chief in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Lawrence S. Cohen, MD, the Emeritus Ebenezer K. Hunt Professor of Medicine, oversaw the early growth of cardiac catheterization, coronary arteriography and coronary care for patients at Yale New Haven Hospital. He initiated the Yale trials comparing medical cardiac treatment and bypass surgery in patients with stable angina pectoris. He then led the Yale trials of thrombolytics in unstable angina and myocardial infarction and laid the foundation for much of the subsequent clinical trials research in the section.

Cohen, an accomplished teacher, started and for 39 years led the medical student course in cardiac auscultation, “Learning Heart Sounds”. He is a recipient of the Francis Gilman Blake Award of the Yale School of Medicine for Outstanding Teaching of the Medical Sciences. He is the past president of the Association of University Cardiologists, and past president of the Interurban Clinical Club, founded by William Osler in 1905. He also chaired the Clinical Trials Review Committee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for two terms.
